Ms. Areej Al Saad, Clinical Dietitian and member of the Bahrain Diabetes Society, emphasized the importance of carbohydrate counting as one of the modern and effective approaches in managing diabetes in children, particularly those living with Type 1 diabetes. She explained that it plays a major role in helping achieve better blood sugar stability while giving children greater flexibility in choosing suitable foods according to their individual treatment plans.

She noted that diabetes management does not rely only on avoiding sweets or restricting certain foods, but is mainly based on understanding the amount of carbohydrates consumed in daily meals. Since all types of carbohydrates are ultimately converted into glucose, they directly affect blood sugar levels. Therefore, knowing the amount consumed and estimating portions can help improve glucose control and reduce sharp fluctuations.

She further explained that portion size is a key factor in this process. Even healthy foods such as rice, bread, or fruits may raise blood sugar if eaten in large quantities, whereas controlling portion sizes can lead to better outcomes and allow children to benefit from food without unnecessary restriction. She also highlighted that this skill enables families to plan school and home meals in a more balanced and practical way.

In addition, she stated that children need a supportive environment that encourages regular meal patterns, includes protein at breakfast, and limits sugary drinks, while promoting healthy eating habits both at home and at school. Stable blood sugar levels not only improve physical health, but also contribute to better concentration, attention, daily energy, and overall mood in children.

The Bahrain Diabetes Society continues its efforts to raise health and nutrition awareness and to provide community initiatives that support children living with diabetes and their families, empowering them to manage the condition with confidence and knowledge for a healthier and more stable future.
